The introduction of wind erosion area of Aralik-Igdir, Turkey.

Turkey has a wind erosion area of 465.913 ha. 322.474 ha of the wind erosion area is in Konya province and particularly 103.000 ha of it belongs to Karapinar district. Karapinar is the largest wind erosion area of Turkey. The wind erosion area of Aralik-Igdir is 13.554 ha and the second largest one of Turkey.

The wind erosion area of Aralik-Igdir is located 45-65 km east of Igdir province. Some part of the area is in the area of Kazım Karabekir State Farm and lies in a strip with an 8-km width and a 20-km length from skirts of Mount Ararat to town center of Aralık.

The climate of the wind erosion area is arid and semi-arid. It is the driest region of Turkey. Annual average precipitation is 244.2 mm and total annual evaporation is 1094.9 mm. Annual average temperature and annual average relative humidity are 12.0 C and %58, respectively, and prevailing wind direction is northwest.

The soils of wind erosion area have sand, loamy sand and loamy find sand (63.8-87.6% sand; 4.6-20.0 silt; 3.9-12.0). While the rate of soil particles bigger than 0.84 mm is 0.48-30.47%, the rate of soil particles bigger than 0.106 mm is 47.17-87.73%. All soils located in wind erosion area are potentially sensitive to wind erosion.

Any direct measurement of wind erosion has not been performed in this area till now. It is essential and important to carry out these direct measurements.
